In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are different pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero Ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is connected, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, as i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles.
