How to Replace an audi car key holder G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge, above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test because there are several connector pins, and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look replacement key for audi a4 signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The Car Key Cover Audi will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that I might have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know both the position and speed the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these sensors go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. The good news is they are very affordable and replacement key for audi easily accessible particularly when you're looking at the Bosch model, which is what we have. 5. Tachometer
