How to Replace an audi key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. However, the code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are various pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. Examine replacement key for audi a4 signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine with no sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, as i believe that i've completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, for example. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shut down.

A failing G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, or an unfire when in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is failing and needs replacing. The good news is that they are quite affordable and readily available particularly in the case of the Bosch model, which is what ours are. Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your car. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your audi tt key fob since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the engine of the car is turning.
