How to Replace an audi Key shell G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor audi Tt key programming is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are different pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors are not firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car key cover audi is able to start when the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is plugged in but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. If you have any of these issues it is likely your sensor is failing and requires audi tt replacement key. They're inexpensive and easy to locate especially in the case of a Bosch unit like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this component is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many problems in your car. It is a crucial part of the audi key fob's transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU is then able to process this signal to control fuel, timig and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. There should be an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these points.
