There are some issues however, which hinder them from being our first choice. One of the flaws of the Q5 is its navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's therefore prone to get stuck on shoes and socks, and it couldn't navigate rooms with lots of people well during our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that can see around corners.

However, it's a good choice to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on an Roomba from iRobot, and you have a mostly unfinished home or office. It's also very quiet and you can use it while you're at work, or going to school. It doesn't have the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming that is offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes that don't adhere well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle that can be emptied by itself. If you're required to, the mopping pad can be replaced with an awe-inspiring one in a matter of just a few seconds.

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive vacuuming and mopping capabilities into an elegant, compact package. It also supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can clean the floor even after it vacuums. This is a feature we haven't seen on other robotic vacuum/mop combinations.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

With a sleek circular design that looks like a regular Roomba than the competitors' boxy units This robot vacuum and mop combo is among the most attractive looking models in our reviews. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It features advanced features like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that can wash mop pads autonomously).

It's the only robot vacuum/mop that has 100% in our tests due to a mix of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured lighting system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mops.

As with other iRobot models, the X40 is user-friendly, with an easy mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only drawback is that it's still quite an eerily noisy device, which can be problematic if you run it in the morning prior to work, or at night when you try to sleep.

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a variety of sophisticated features that will let you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning device, similar to Ecovacs the top of the line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It features a multi-functional dock that can automatically emptys the bin of the vacuum and fills up the water tank, and cleans and dries mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of an array of LIDAR and structured light to create the floor plan and detect obstacles, navigating more intelligently than its top competitors. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time hazards detection but this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and could be confused with power cords or obstructions.

Additionally a recharge and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to continue where it left off is great for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more intelligent than its price would suggest. It has a great vacuuming performance, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with a single pad that uses an oscillating motion that is cleaner than the other robot vacuums that mop mop cleaners we've tested. And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured app and an auto-emptying, washable base.

The iRobot application is designed to guide you through an exercise in mapping which collects information about your floorplan, as well as any "no go" areas that you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, set up the perfect spot for cleaning or prioritise your dirtiest rooms to ensure better performance. The app comes with a variety of options, including seasonal suggestions, customized mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.
